Overview
This study analyzes 337 crashes from 11 Nevada towns along rural highways to identify factors associated with crash severity. Most crashes occurred on dry roads and in clear weather, but the analysis also found greater injury risk for crashes occurring between midnight and 4 a.m., on weekdays, and involving motorcycles.
Motorcycle crashes had an 80.2% probability of being injury crashes, and speeding was 17 times more associated with injury crashes than vehicle mechanical defects. The findings can inform speed-zone decisions and other roadway safety measures.
