This report develops guidance for setting speed limits in towns along Nevada rural highways. It analyzes ten years of crash data from 11 towns and finds a strong relationship between crash counts and the share of vehicles exceeding posted speed limits.
The study identifies the 85th-percentile speed as an important factor in setting limits, alongside crash history and roadway characteristics. It presents recommendations to help agencies make speed-zone decisions consistently and reduce speed-related crashes.
